Carbondown Bath
Bath businessman, active Christian and pioneering environmentalist, Steve Sherwin asks us 'What if?' we took reducing our carbon emissions more seriously? And isn't God the first environmentalist on the planet?
What if there was a way for families to easily record their carbon emissions budget? That then showed them how to realistically reduce their emission levels to a level that meant they were doing their bit towards meeting the global targets.
What if there is a way for neighbourhoods, social networks, schools and even churches to spur each other on to do this? and to get to know and value each other better in an unprecedented injection of a spirit of inter-dependence and cooperation?
What if there was a way to gather all this grassroots achievement up, partner with other networks with a common aim in the city and watch our progress as a city as we really go for it together?
What if could overcome the selfishness pitfalls that would normally forestall such an initiative by bringing Biblical truth to bear and by leading by example in our church communities?
What if we were to see the damage to our world and to our lives and relationships that our heavy usage of resources, the environment etc that our present means of consumption are inflicting? And turn from our 'wicked ways' and ask the Lord to heal our land.
What if we were to see and counter the idolatrous pressures that 'doing the economy' have embraced? and make a stand against them as we rebuild a low carbon economy here in Bath. With all the creative genius we have been blessed with and that only takes our fare (Jubilee) share of the earth's ability to support consumption levels.
What if, as we adapt to living sustainably we covenant with communities already suffering from climate change and learn together as we go forward?
What if, instead of being part of the problem (with our theology of 'it's all going to burn up so why bother about the earth) we bring some 'future now/kingdom come' Good News to our bewildered world, by re-discovering for ourselves how the Lord feels about his creation (mankind – precariously dependent on it – included) and re-mining the excellent biblical scholarship that's always been there and which fast been added to as we go back again to the scriptures with our present challenges?
We have an idea (and the technology) to progress this journey here in Bath.... get in touch if you and your Christian and non-christian friends would like to know more.
