People Against Poverty! Val Huxley Tells Us Why Her Charity Needed A Gearshift
Val Huxley is the Chief Executive of People Against Poverty - the new brand and Christian charity replacing Robin Hood Ministries. After 8 years of serving communities, Val explains the rebrand is needed, as her Trowbridge-based charity draws together people, companies and supporters internationally.
“Over the last few years, specific groups have developed and worked together to raise funds and collaborate with us. It is time to step back, look at how the charity is structured and bring these groups together under one umbrella whilst retaining the sector identities of Music, Business, Education and Art. I am delighted with the new look, focus and structure!" she said.
"I believe that we now have something to offer for everyone – and let’s face it, fighting poverty is everyone’s business!”
The charity encompasses five groups: Business Against Poverty - A community of businesses who, through their engagement, support the reduction of international poverty, Education Against Poverty - A community through which Schools, Colleges and Universities participate, Music Against Poverty - A community for those involved in music and have a passion to use their involvement to reach out to those in poverty and to inspire action and Arts Against Poverty - whatever the expression of yourself or your organisation and you wish to use it in the field of
poverty relief.
The Starlight Children's Home in Nepal is just one of the projects funded by People Against Poverty.
Robin Hood Ministries was founded in 2003 and since then has evolved significantly. Their new brand – People against Poverty - encompasses the focus on communities and brings together individuals, companies and other supporters, and the projects that they work with in countries of operations, Romania, Nepal and Haiti.
The new look People against Poverty is the launch pad for turning the charity’s vision into a reality: to work with communities in Romania, Haiti and Nepal providing food, shelter, clothing and education for those in extreme poverty.
“People against Poverty makes a real difference by meeting basic needs whilst encouraging and promoting self-sufficiency, new hope and a sustainable and brighter future.
"I am really excited about growing the charity and making an even bigger difference to families in communities who desperately need our help" said Val.
In addition to individual supporters who contribute through one-off donations and child sponsorship, the other communities are growing fast. Many local businesses are familiar with Business against Poverty which runs on a membership basis and to date comprises around 90 companies.Music against Poverty has launched its first major event Jamboree – a festival of live music, great food and drink, and something for all the familly, which will take place in Victoria Park on 6 August.
Performers will include Tom McRae, whose debut album was nominated for The Mercury Prize, a Q Magazine Award and a Brit.
Artists against Poverty are aiming to raise £30,000 through sales of 1001 handmade journals and Education against Poverty takes groups of school children out to a project to build a dwelling (sanctuary home) for a family in just five days.
