Chris and Sheila please tell us a little about yourself?
We are part of the More to Life project where the Christians of Newbridge and Weston work together in activities which interest, encourage and inspire the local community, living out Jesus's words, "I have come that you may have life, in all its fullness."
Tell us about your plans to mark the jubilee!?
On the 2 June, Weston and Newbridge will be holding 'Jubilee WestFest' from 12 noon until 5pm. Weston High Street will be closed to traffic to hold a street party
with refreshments, games, entertainment and stalls.
At the same time up on the Weston recreation ground there will be an opportunity to 'have a go' at a sport or learn a new skill.
Then from 5 - 9pm, the festival continues on the recreation ground with a barbeque and live music, including the Bath Blues Brothers. Local churches, schools, traders, clubs and associations are involved. The festival is 'hospitality' on a grand scale and we don't have to 'invite' anyone! Our friends and neighbours are there and we just need to be ready with a great welcome and ready to have fun together.
What has inspired you to mark the jubilee? And to light beacons?
Weston has celebrated royal events as long as anyone can remember! For some reason it is important to mark special occasions and create shared memories. When we think back over the years, it is often such days that stand out. Our children may never again live to see a monarch who has reigned for 60 years.
On the Monday night, the Queen will light the first of 2012 beacons across the nation. We hope to have one of those beacons here. A beacon is a fantastic symbol- drawing the gaze, a sign of life, a light in the night.
Who else is doing something similar in the city?
WestFest is special. It is a festival but not for a limited group or particular interest. This includes everyone, all ages and walks of life, and is about sharing as a community and celebration.
There will be other events taking place during the long bank holiday weekend, including the city's Party in the Park on the Tuesday. We hope to bring a little of the national excitement to a local level.
Are you appealing for other churches and organisations to get involved?
Yes, definitely, especially if you have members of your congregation living in Weston and Newbridge. I love being able to talk equally about this event both with those of faith and those without.
We rarely have such an opportunity to work together enthusiastically on an equal footing and I have enjoyed being able to encourage local traders and clubs as they struggle in difficult times, to encourage the schools to demonstrate their creativity and to give both youngsters and old folk a day to remember.
Will it be a fun day?
The lasting memory of all at WestFest 2011 was that it was a happy day. That will be my prayer again for this year!
Anything you wish to add.!
Don't miss this special event. Come to help or just come! And pray for sunny skies and hearts!
