Save Haycombe Crematorium's Cross! Petition Launched
A petition protesting against the proposed removal of the cross in the window of Haycombe Crematorium, and for a replacement of a similar one in the planned new window has been launched. This follows the announcement of £140,000 refurbishment plans for the crematorium which include the removal of the cross and installation of a portable one, as reported in Bath Chronicle on 2nd February.

The petition follows letters of protest from Christians published in the Bath Chronicle and objects as follows:
'We, the undersigned, wish to protest against the removal of the cross in the window of Haycombe Crematorium and ask for a replacement of a similar one in the new window, because:
-
the cross, which tastefully and beautifully enhances the panoramic view, offers all people comfort and hope in the resurrection, whether a believer or not.
-
the provision of an alternative “mobile” cross is a poor substitute, as it could become an odd-on feature, which in time could be permanently removed.
-
any such removal denies our traditions and is central to our culture and Christian heritage.
-
as far as we are aware, no objection has been made to its being in the window which gives the room a natural spiritual context, much needed at such a time.'
Hugh Mackay says: "According to the Crematorium staff, the window needs replacing and is to be replaced by a sealed double-glazed unit, but there will be a cross in a central place in the room, which can be removed if desired.
"Pam Hitchins, Charles Stammers and I feel very strongly that that is a deliberate attempt to down-play our Christian heritage and we are raising this petition to send to Councillor John Everitt, Leader of the Council."
