Save Haycombe Crematorium's Cross! Petition Launched

Crematorium_chapel_windowA petition protesting against the proposed removal of the cross in the window of Haycombe Crematorium, and for a replacement of a similar one in the planned new window has been launched.  This follows the announcement of £140,000 refurbishment plans for the crematorium which include the removal of the cross and installation of a portable one, as reported in Bath Chronicle on 2nd February

The petition follows letters of protest from Christians published in the Bath Chronicle and objects as follows:

'We, the undersigned, wish to protest against the removal of the cross in the window of Haycombe Crematorium and ask for a replacement of a similar one in the new window, because:

  1. the cross, which tastefully and beautifully enhances the panoramic view, offers all people comfort and hope in the resurrection, whether a believer or not.

  1. the provision of an alternative “mobile” cross is a poor substitute, as it could become an odd-on feature, which in time could be permanently removed.

  2. any such removal denies our traditions and is central to our culture and Christian heritage.

  3. as far as we are aware, no objection has been made to its being in the window which gives the room a natural spiritual context, much needed at such a time.'

Hugh Mackay says: "According to the Crematorium staff, the window needs replacing and is to be replaced by a sealed double-glazed unit, but there will be a cross in a central place in the room, which can be removed if desired.

"Pam Hitchins, Charles Stammers and I feel very strongly that that is a deliberate attempt to down-play our Christian heritage and we are raising this petition to send to Councillor John Everitt, Leader of the Council."

February 2012

According to the Crem staff, the window needs replacing and is to be replaced by a sealed double-glazed unit, but there will be a cross in a

central place in the room, which can be removed if desired.

Pam Hitchins, Charles Stammers and I feel very strongly that that is a deliberate attempt to appease the 2% non-British population of Bath (national average = 5%) by down-playing our Christian heritage and I attach a petition we are raising to send to Cllr John Everitt, Leader of the Council.   I have spoken to Margaret who is happy for us to briefly mention it at tomorrow mornings’ service and give an opportunity to sign it.   However, if you can print off the attachment and get 10-20 people to sign it who are not church members and let us it have back by the end of the month, so much the better.

BTW The first signatures we got were our two local councillors, Steve Hedges and Nigel Roberts, who are going to ask for it to be raised in their next open council meeting.
