What have been your top Easter sellers in terms of Christian books?
We have sold a lot of Lent books in the run up to Easter, but our bestseller has been Tom Wright’s new book How God Became King which publishes on April 19, which has been greatly anticipated and in which he challenges the reader to re-assess Jesus Christ as seen in the Gospels: an explosive, challenging read.
And why have they appealed so much do you think?
In the run up to Easter a lot of Christians like to focus on the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, Son of God, and reflect on what that means to them. A book is often the best way to do that.
Who is the best selling theologian at the moment? and why do you think he appeals to a wide range of Christians?
Tom Wright is firmly founded in the Bible and has the unique ability of conveying the depth of his learning in a practical and direct way. He wants a response from the reader!
You have opened the Christian bookshop in Bath!... Why is it so vital for Christians to have such a service, facility in the city?
Aslan Books at St Michael’s Church is a pleasant, well situated little book shop which displays the latest Christian books, as well as cards. It’s a place for Christians to meet, chat, have a coffee and be encouraged in their faith.
Is there something special about visiting a bookshop - rather than simply buying online?
There is nothing like having books, cards, CDs, DVDs available to all to browse – and to be able to have a knowledgeable bookseller (a real live human being) to ask questions of.
How has the bookshop been doing so far? Are there any special Easter offers?
The book shop is slowly getting known, as is the service that we are able to offer: we can specially order any book in print in the UK. A useful service, as our display space is limited.
You offer Bible study guides and reading notes via the bookshop - is it important do you think for Christians to have aids to study the bible?
I think we all need help in unpacking the Bible and in reading it regularly. Sometimes we miss its hidden depths, sometimes we skim or ignore a passage because it is so familiar! I also think a discipline of Bible reading accompanied by prayer or a time of meditation is great at helping us in our daily walk.
What are you looking forward to most this summer?
Warm weather!! And a few good books to read!
Are there any Christian books linked with the Olympics or the Jubilee you would recommend?
There are inevitably a few. Complete Surrender tells the story of Eric Liddell – who refused to compete on a Sunday, changed event – and won!! Gold is packed with
inspirational tips on helping us run the ultimate race.
Come and visit our new shop: open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm at St Michael’s Church – opposite Waitrose.
