Nexus Holiday From Home.. Serving The Community
According to the charity, Family Action more families than ever this summer can't afford to go on holiday, or pay for days out and activities to entertain their children. Nexus's Holiday From Home is a service for the community running parallel to their succesful 'Children's Summer Holiday Club', giving adults a taste of holiday without leaving their BA postcode. Sharon Keevill tells us more!
How long have you been offering Holiday at Home events?
We have been running this every summer for about 10 years.
What inspired you to create this service for people?
The idea came out of the Children's Holiday Club - why not have a Holiday Club for adults as well?
At Nexus - you seem to take a deliberately 'community' serving approach- is that fair to say?
Yes, serving the community is very much part of the mission of Nexus and of the Methodist Church as a whole. One of the great quotes of John Wesley is 'Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can.'
What sort of activities form holiday at home? Can anyone join in?
Cream teas (at Walcot), a day of crafts with a ploughman's lunch and musical entertainment (at Claremont), a trip to the seaside and a 'special edition' of the regular Thursday morning Coffee and Chat at Claremont - with added cakes! It's open to anyone but as places are limited, we do have to ask that people book a place for the craft day and the coach trip. See the website for more info and contact details.
